About St. Michael’s Legal Center:
SMLC is a Christian, Catholic oriented, academic pro bono law firm, associated with a law school. We cover eight (8) counties including yours. We are located on the campus of Western Michigan University, Cooley Law School, in Riverview, FL. We also operate seven (7) clinics in seven (7) Catholic churches throughout our service area. Our areas of practice include family law, bankruptcy, foreclosure defense, immigration and probate and estate planning.
SMLC offers legal assistance to the indigent and working poor who cannot afford attorneys. Last year SMLC received over 35,000 requests for service, and, in turn, provided approximately $4.8 million dollars in volunteer legal services.
Many pro bono agencies are limited as to the clients they can serve by their annual income which is usually 125% of the Federal poverty guidelines. SMLC is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) law firm. We do not receive funds from any local government, Federal, state or bar associations, and therefore, have been approved for income levels of up to 225% of the Federal poverty guidelines (the poor and working poor). For our income, we depend upon community members, law firms, attorneys and churches for donations.
